The term directory of directories speaks for itself, it is like the top level directory, from which all of the other directories are listed. There are about 582,000,000 results for the search term directory on Google, and all of those need a home, much in the same way Google is mostly regarded the top search engine, and most search engines are found via Google. There are by comparison about 68,000,000 results for directory of directories on Google
A good directory of directories will have clear categories, and as the directory grows, sub categories branch off those categories, which is why some of the bigger directory of directories have over 5000 pages.
Three of the more well known directories would be Dmoz, Google directory and Yahoo, obviously the Google directory being google's own directory and Yahoo having its own and in fact starting off from a directory.
The fact that Google directory copies the results from Dmoz, is not being discussed here, but it may be worth mentioning. My personal opinion, after many many hours study is, if you search for any topic on Google, 8/10 times the higher rated websites, IE the first page of results are websites found in either Dmoz, Google's directory or Yahoo, the three best known directories.
